License Plate Recognition (LPR) is a challenging task:
1. Reflection. The license plates are intentionally made of highly reflective material. Especially at night, streetlights, vehicle headlights, or even the camera's infrared light can create strong glare on the plate. As a result, the plate mostly appears as a bright white rectangle with little visible character detail.
2. Motion blur. Vehicles are moving fast; the image of the plate is often blurry.
These challenges are physical in nature and cannot by solved by software alone. An LPR camera must be specially designed to minimize the reflection and motion blur. This requires specialized sensors, lenses, infrared illumination, and image-processing technology optimized for license plate capture.
With such specialized LPR cameras and video recorders, vehicle license plates can be captured, recognized, and stored on the video recorder. Clients can search for specific license plate numbers, create white lists to automatically grant access to authorized vehicles, or create black lists to deny access and trigger alarms when certain vehicles are detected.
